The RailCats Sign A MLB Pitcher!

Carlos Sanabria

Now before you claim this is click-bait. Carlos did pitch in games against The Arizona Diamondbacks and The Oakland A’s. His debut came on August 5th, 2020, against the Diamondbacks, where he pitched for 1 inning, giving up 2 runs on 2 hits. 1 hit was a home run, he walked 2, and struck out 1. In his second game, he pitched against the A’s where he pitched for 1 inning, gave up 1 hit, 1 walk, and 1 strikeout. So he did play in the Majors even if it was 4 years ago.

Carlos Sanabria is a right-handed pitcher from Venezuela. He is 27 years old, 6-3, and weighs 200 lbs. He was signed by the Houston Astros as a free agent on March 7th, 2014. He made his MLB debut on August 5th, 2020, against the D-Backs. He was later claimed off of waivers by the Kansas City Royals on October 30, 2020. After he finished his 2021 season in KC’s ranks, he elected for free agency. He signed a minor league deal with the Detroit Tigers. He was released on March 3, 2023.

Looking at Carlos’ Minor League stats, he had a record of 24-18, An ERA of 3.82, played in 181 games, started in 30 of them and had 20 saves. He pitched in 41.1 Innings He had 409 Strikeouts, Walked 199. He had a WHIP of 1.33 and His batting average against was .230

Now if Carlos Sanabria sounds familiar to you, it’s because we did see him pitch at the Steel Yard last season when he was playing for the Miles Wolff Cup Champion Kansas City Monarchs (He didn’t finish the season with KC). In that game against the RailCats, he pitched for 1 inning, giving up 3 runs on 3 hits and earning the loss. With KC last year, he played in 5 games, all in relief appearances, pitching for 5 innings with a record of 0-2, an ERA of 13.50, 5.1 innings pitched, giving up 6 hits, 8 runs, 2 home runs, 4 walks, and 3 strikeouts.

I don’t see this as a terrible signing. Last season with KC was his first professional action season since 2021. Plus, on a really good Monarchs team, he didn’t have a long leash. I see this signing as Lamar wanting to bring on a veteran player that has been to the majors, and that is something that RailCats have been missing for years. He’s going to be hungry for this opportunity to show what got him to the MLB in the first place (even if it was 2 games). He’s more than likely going to be in the bullpen, and for having a career ERA of 4.07, even with the 2 high ERAs from the MLB and last year, those numbers are really good. I have a feeling we could see something very special about Carlos in the 2024 season! WELCOME TO THE SOUTH SHORE!
