CHRIS ERWIN
The 28-year-old left-handed pitcher is back for the 2024 season! This will be his 4th year on the South Shore! In his 3 years with the RailCats, he has a record of 9 and 14 in 47 games. He started in 36 games and has an ERA of 3.90, credited with 2 saves. He gave up 170 hits and 84 walks while striking out 186 in 189.1 innings pitched.
Last year his season was cut a little short with an injury. last year he pitched in 13 games while starting in 12 games. He had a 3-4 record. He pitched in 54 innings, He struck out 56 while giving up 53 hits, 20 hits and 31 runs and 27 were earned. He also gave up 6 Homeruns. His WHIP was 1.352, 8.8 Hits/9, 1 HR/9, 3.3 BB9 and 9.3 SO/9.
Now some people will say, “How would you classify Chris Erwin, the Ace of The RailCats, when he didn’t even start in any opening day games?” Well, in 2021 and 2022, it was Trevor Lubking who would have opened in 2023 if he wasn’t hurt. Even last year with Edward Cuello, who was coming off of a 2022 season-ending injury, was probably the right choice. But what you don’t see is how constant Erwin is.
Looking at his 3 previous seasons he was 1st in ERA among starting pitching an ERA of 3.09 in 2021 and 4.01 in 2022 and was 2nd last year behind Harrison Francis (who is finding success in the Puerto Winter League) at a 4.43 ERA and Erwin had a 4.50 ERA. Erwin is sneaky good. Yea he doesn’t shock you with strikeouts. But he keeps the hits, walks, and homeruns down. Going into 2024 he is hands down the Ace. Being a constant pitcher in any league isn’t an easy feat. I know his ERA has gone up each year but he’s a pitcher that has stuff but needs to have a better defensive team behind him. Hopefully the team will be better behind him and have more offensive power and there will be no doubt he is the Ace of the team! WELCOME BACK CHRIS ERWIN!!!
