10 Takeaways in 15-5 Loss To The Lake Country Dockhounds

The RailCats, after that loss, are on a 10-game losing streak for the 2nd time this season. They fall to 28-61 on the season. The RailCats would score 1 in the 1st, 2 in the 4th, 1 in the 7th, and 1 in the 8th. The Dockhounds would score 1 in the 1st, 3 in the 2nd, 3 in the 4th, 3 in the 5th, and 5 in the 8th.

Ethan Hankins would get the loss for the RailCats. He went 4 innings, giving up 8 hits, 7 runs, 5 walks, and 8 strikeouts.

Kelvan Pilot would get the win for the Dockhounds. He went 6 innings, giving up 5 hits, 3 runs, 1 walk, and striking out 9.

1. Gio Diaz extended his on-base streak to 6 after he walked in the 1st inning, despite being down 0-2 in the count. He also extended his hit streak to 5 after he singled in the 3rd. Thanks to Andrew Mild and access to the RailCats history book, Gio Diaz is the only RailCat to have back-to-back 25 stolen base seasons; he hit 25 stolen bases yesterday. He now has 64 stolen bases for his RailCats career. Jesus Marriaga leads the RailCats with 68 career stolen bases.

2. Marcos Gonzalez got the RailCats on the board in the 1st by hitting an RBI double that scored Gio Diaz from 2nd. The Dockhounds would answer in the bottom of the 1st on a Curtis Terry RBI single. If the Dockhounds had a natural turf field, Howard Rodriguez would have gotten to it and would have had Hernandez out at 2nd.

3. The Dockhounds would get a key piece of their lineup back with Ryan Hernandez, who was out for 10 games with an injury. He went 3-4, scored 2 runs, had 5 RBIs, 1 walk, and 1 home run.

4. To end the 3rd, Guillermo Quintana threw out Ray Zuberer. That would give Quintana a 3-game streak where he would throw a runner out trying to steal a base.

5. Carlos Rincon hit an absolute bomb in the 4th that pulled the RailCats within 1. It was a 2-run homer that scored Miguel Sierra. This was Carlos’ 12th home run of the year and his 1st since June 21st. Rincon was also out for a month with a back injury, so this was his 1st home run since the injury as well.

6. Guillermo Quintana took a batted ball to the hand while fielding in the 4th inning, and Cooper Edwards will come in as a substitute for Quintana.

7. In the 6th, Miguel Sierra made a nice snag of a line drive from Josh Altmann and turned it into a double play after getting Curtis Terry out at 1st. A nice way to pick up a teammate after an error from Olivier Basabe that led to Terry getting on base.

8. Jaykob Acosta made his professional debut tonight against the Lake County Dockhounds, and what an inning he had! He got his first pro strikeout on four pitches, all strikes. Acosta struck out Luke Napleton, and then he struck out Blake Tiberi with a backdoor slider to get Tiberi looking, followed by Chavez Young grounding out to Miguel Sierra. Even though it was only one inning, Acosta looks like he has a very promising future. He has good speed on his fastball and a good break on the slider.

9. Deston Dotson just isn’t cutting it as a pitcher for the RailCats. In his last 2 outings, he pitched 2 innings, gave up 11 runs (7 Earned), 5 hits, and 9 walks. Tonight, the RailCats were within 5 in the 8th, but Dotson gave up 5 runs on 2 hits and 4 walks. On the year, Dotson has given up 28 walks in 9.2 innings pitched.

10. The RailCats are now tied for the most losses in a single season as a member of the American Association at 61. Their record in 2021 was 39-61. My fear is that they might not make it to 30 wins and it’s only 2 wins away. Their worst record was back in 2004 when they went 31-65. The positive note is that in 2005 they went on to win the Northern League Championship under newly hired manager Greg Taggert. So I wonder if history might repeat itself next year?
