RailCats Talk

10 Takeaways In Game 2 Of The Winnipeg Series

In the last 10 takeaways for the 2024 season, as I will be on vacation for the next week while the wife and I travel to Colorado, I will not have time to do the takeaways. The RailCats dropped their 4th straight game with a final score of 3-1.

1. The RailCats did threaten early in this game but couldn’t capitalize on 3 hits. Anthony Abbatine would open the game with a single but would get out after Gio Diaz grounded the ball to 2nd and the Goldeyes tried to turn 2 but only could get Abbatine. Basabe would fly out, LG Castillo would single. Then Jose Contreras would single and Gio Diaz would try to score from second but would be thrown out at home. The RailCats had 6 hits in the first 5 innings and left 2 in scoring position, with one runner thrown out at home.

2. We can put Nick Penzetta on the RailCats outfield highlight reel. He made a nice diving play to rob Rob Emery of an extra base hit.

3. The Goldeyes were 0-12 against Tai Tiedemann and didn’t get their first hit or base runner until the 5th inning, when the Goldeyes would take the lead. After Tai gave up back-to-back singles, he tried to pick off Miles Simmington but spiked the ball into the ground, allowing it to get past the RailCat that was covering 2nd (I couldn’t see who was covering 2nd). Simmington would then take 3rd and score on an Evan Alexander Sac Fly.

4. In the 6th, Edwin Arroyo would steal 2nd base, and Howard Rodriguez would make contact with Arroyo’s head with his foot. Both players took much-needed time to recover, as Howard was limping around and Arroyo laid on 2nd base for a minute or two. But I really don’t think it affected Arroyo because on the very next pitch he stole 3rd.

5. Goldeyes extended their lead to 3-0 in the 6th after back-to-back RBI singles from Mile Simington and Rob Emery.

6. Tai Tiedmann got the bad end of the deal in this game. He had one of his best nights as a RailCats. His stat line looked like this: 7 Innings pitched, 6 Hits, 3 runs, 2 earned (But it should be 3 earned runs as it was an error on him), 0 walks, and 2 strikeouts. All the Goldeyes’ production came after the beginning of the 5th. This was a game that Tai really could have come out with a win if the RailCats’ batters could have capitalized on their early hits.

7. The RailCats did get on the board in the 9th when Kenny Levari got his first professional league RBI by grounding out to 2nd, but LG Castillo scored, making the final score 3-1 Winnipeg.

8. I really want to note how good this defense has been in the last 2 games. I know that the defense has been the biggest bright spot of the team, but the plays that everyone has been making are really something to note.

9. Looking at the RailCats team stats, the offense had 9 hits, 1 run, 2 walks, and 11 strikeouts. The pitching staff, which consisted of only Tai Tiedemann and Josh Smith, combined for 6 hits, 3 runs, 2 earned runs, and 3 strikeouts. Josh Smith just added a strikeout to the line as he went 1 inning, striking out 1.

10. If the RailCats play all their games, no matter if they win out this year, they will set their worst record in American Association history. Their previous winning percentage low was .391 (39-61). The best they can do this year is .350, which is 35-65.
